Trip Report: Big Reds and Black Drum in Louisiana

Field Journal

May, 2018

Back in May, my buddy David Higman and I fished the shallow water marshes of southeastern Louisiana from a skiff.  We spent two days sight-fishing stalking big redfish and giant tailing black drum.  We lucked out with perfect weather and our guide Miles Larose put us into fish the entire time.  I’d never fished the marsh flats wilderness of this watershed.  It was awesome!  We focused on single and small pods of big reds and black drum.  The reds of the Louisiana shallows are on average MUCH bigger than the reds of the Texas coast.  Miles is a pro with a superb skiff and equipment, and is one of the best guides I’ve ever fished with.  Along with redfish and black drum, his clients also catch giant Jack Crevalle.  Check out these photos.

Miles offers his anglers a very comfortable house for accommodations located only minutes away from the water. It’s a perfect setup, and after a day on the water, it’s close enough to New Orleans to eat dinner at one of the French Quarter’s many world-class restaurants. Whether you fly fish or use conventional gear, I strongly recommend to book your next LA shallow water fishing trip with Miles. I re-booked for May 2019.

Check out this post-Hurricane Isaac video highlighting Miles. Big fish attack surface poppers in this great fishing flick.

For more info on Miles’s LA fishing, call/email me, or Miles directly.
