Trip Report: Ocellated Turkeys and Tarpon in the Yucatan!

Field Journal

Campeche Province, Mexico

April 11, 2018

I shot my turkey this morning. Super hunt and done in the classic way – we called him in. Excellent. Really fun hunt. Beautiful bird with long spurs…

The ocellated turkey is hunted in the jungles of the Yucatan. The bird has exceptionally iridescent feathers, long spurs, and answers to a call. The jungle is thick and is home to jaguars, pumas, brocket deer, monkeys, javelina, great currasow, crested guan, and other prolific birdlife. An amazing wilderness for sure. On our trip, the native Mayan guides proved to be superb hunters and guides. Our group of eight all tagged out on turkeys by noon on Day Three. Our outfitter, Arturo Malo, and his team provided our group with remarkable experience and adventure. Thanks, Arturo!

With a couple of days to spare, we traveled back to Campeche City early. We checked out the remarkable Edzna Mayan plaza and spent a couple of days tarpon fishing. Campeche City is quiet colonial town founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadors. This is a nice place to visit.

For further Yucatan jungle hunt info, call or email me anytime.

Good Hunting,

Gordie
