Gambel's Quail 2014

November 10, 2013

After returning from Idaho, I headed to Baja Mexico with friends to hunt quail.  I visited the area in March and really liked what I saw.  We hunted valley quail in the Ojos Negros area for two days.  This region of Baja is beautiful, very remote and wild.  The head guide and bird boys found plenty of coveys of quail.  The shooting was fast paced and exciting.  We took plenty of birds.  The coveys were smaller than normal (30-100 birds per covey) due to a dry spring and poor hatch.  The last few seasons, covey size ranged from 100 to 500 birds per covey!

We headed to the outfitters lodge located south of Mexicali.  Here we spent two dayshunting Gambel’s quail.  The technique to hunt Gambel’s is to drive the birds along hedgerows, canal ditches and brushy sand dunes to a line of shooters.  The 2014 hatch for Gambel’s was tremendous.  Covey size ranged from 50 to 300 birds (best estimate).  The bird boys succeeded driving covey after covey to us.  Quail everywhere flying hard and fast.  Super intense shooting.  We shot some pheasants as well.  The outfitter has leased enormous amounts of country for wild pheasants, doves and quail.  The lodge was very good and the food was terrific.  The hunt manager and bird boys worked very hard to produce birds for the group.  We loved the hunt and all plan on returning.  Hunting the Baja, in my opinion, may be the highest volume shooting of wild birds outside of South America.

I hope all are well and enjoying days in the field.
